Axbridge Maces 400 – Celebration

Axbridge Maces 400 – celebration!

On the 25th of June 2023, two ceremonial maces in the care of Axbridge Town Trust, became 400 years old!

Dating back to the reign of James I, the Royal Charter of 1623 granted Axbridge the right to have two Maces. The Maces retired from public use in 2020.

An event on Sunday the 25th of June marked this historical occasion. It was attended by the High Sherriff of Somerset, Robert Drewett, Deputy Lieutenant of Somerset Martin Thatcher, distinguished guests including mayors from many Somerset towns, the mayor of Axbridge Francesca Mitton, Axbridge councillors, chairman of Axbridge Town trust Mike Anderson and Trustees (who look after the artifacts and archives on behalf of the town), and Axbridge residents.

The maces are now on public display in The King Johns Hunting Lodge Museum. Come and see them. Two beautiful hand carved wooden maces, created by Axe Valley Menshed, for Axbridge Town Council, are now used at civic ceremonies.
