Town Trust Annual Update – May 2023

Axbridge Town Trust has continued to maintain the town hall and manage the fabric of the town square including the planters and street furniture over the last 12 months. They have also continued in their key role to preserve,  maintain and restore where appropriate, the artefacts, and archive of historical documents on behalf of the town.

Axbridge Town Hall is booked regularly throughout the week for a wide variety of activities. It was used extensively during the pageant period in 2022 for rehearsals and during the performances. It is host to several musical/theatrical productions along with the more normal weekly bookings for clubs, societies and sports/fitness groups. If you are interested in booking, then you can view all the details including costs on the Town Hall page.

In the last year the trustees have replaced the central heating boiler and fitted a HIVE heating control system, which is more controllable and helps to better manage energy usage and costs. The hall’s electricity installation has been surveyed and updated to meet the current regulatory requirements. It is important that the facilities are maintained to a high standard.

Our Town Square is frequently used for town events along with the monthly Farmer’s Market, often requiring trustees to remove street furniture until after the event. Most recently we were all very fortunate to enjoy a sunny street party on Sunday the 7th of May to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III. The Town Trust welcomes events into the Square, and enquiries can be made to The Chairman, Mike Anderson

The Towns Artefacts are a key part of the role of the Town Trust, and recently, The Town Trust, Axbridge Museum Trust and Axbridge Town Council have collaborated to get the 1623 Maces displayed in the museum in 2023 to mark their 400 year anniversary. The town’s historical silk guild banners are subject to a Lottery Fund bid to get them restored. The Town archive, which consists of hundreds of historical documents continues to be held in Taunton, in a temperature and humidity controlled environment.

The Town Trust fundraises currently by running the 150 club, awarding at least 8 prizes bi-monthly.

The Town Trust’s accounts have been submitted to the Charity Commission where members of the public can view activity.

The Trustees are happy to answer any questions residents might have. Contact us, and we will be happy to reply or you can email the current Chairman, Mike Anderson.
