James I’s Royal Charter granted Axbridge two silver maces.
They have been used for civil ceremonies since they were created in 1623. The maces are now being retired from public use to protect them from damage, as they are irreplaceable, and any damage will be very difficult to repair. It’s important that important items like these are not just locked away so a Heritage Lottery Fund application is underway to house them in secure cabinets in King Johns Hunting Lodge, for residents and visitors to be able to view them.
